If there is one thing that fits the oddball category, its Slug Bug Ranch. Created in 2002 by the Crutchfield family, the display of Volkswagen Beetles nose down in the ground was the perfect visual anomaly to siphon tourists into the area and the Longhorn Trading Post, also owned by the Crutchfields. The Trading Post didn’t last, but the bugs are still there, having been modified over the years by impromptu artists with spray paint, hammers and blow torches.
The Cadillac Ranch, just 35 miles west, was the likely inspiration.
Thankfully, the cache itself wasn’t too hard to find. With all that metal, I was not encouraged to find a magnetic cache very quickly. (This is why I avoid railroad car caches!) But we got it and were on our way to the Cadillacs up the road.
